Get cited by the AI engines people actually use.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews all decide what to quote on their own logic. We optimize for it, track citations weekly, and ship the changes that move the needle.

What GEO is, and how you get cited.

The plain-English version of generative engine optimization, how citations actually happen, and how it lines up against traditional SEO.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) or AI-SEO?

GEO, also called AI-SEO or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring a site so AI engines quote it when they answer a question. Instead of chasing a blue-link ranking, you become the source ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or a Google AI Overview cites. The technical baseline is the same as classic SEO (crawlable pages, clean HTML, real expertise, schema), and GEO adds passage-level structure, entity clarity, and open access for AI crawlers on top. That mix is the core of how to earn citations in AI search, and our AI search citation benchmark shows which sources AI engines actually name.

An AI engine cites a page when its crawler can reach it, its parser can read clean text and schema, and the passage answers the question in a self-contained way the model can lift. We track per-query citations weekly across 14 AI engines, restructure content into quotable passages, add Organization and Article schema with a populated sameAs graph, and keep robots rules and llms.txt open to the crawlers that matter. Citations trail the fixes by about four to six weeks, so we measure the trend. For worked examples, see how AI Overviews decide which sites to cite and what changed between GEO and SEO in 2026.

// what GEO actually involves

The work behind getting cited.

GEO, also called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), is not "SEO with a new acronym." The signals that move AI citations overlap with classic SEO on the basics, then diverge sharply on structure, entity disambiguation, and what the LLM finds quotable. For the traffic side of that shift, see what Google's AI-search click number means for small sites. If you are deciding who should do this work, how ConceptSEO compares to an agency or an in-house hire covers the costs and the cases where a subscription is the wrong fit.

Where you get quoted, by engine and query
We run your tracked queries through each AI engine every week. When your domain appears as a citation, it logs which engine, which query, which page, and what passage was quoted, so you can track which AI engines cite you over time.

The four stages of getting quoted.

Most "AI SEO" advice skips straight to "write better content." The real path is more mechanical.

Step 01

Access

The crawler reaches the page. Robots, llms.txt, and CDN rules all decide this. Block one engine by accident and you vanish from its index for months. Google documents each of its crawlers and the user-agent tokens that control them in its crawler overview, Google-Extended included.

Step 02

Parse

The page is converted to clean text. JavaScript-heavy renders fail here. Schema and semantic HTML give the parser structure it can trust.

Step 03

Retrieve

At query time, the engine searches its index for passages that match the user's question. Self-contained passages with clear claims win, and the order the entities appear in that sentence may decide whether the engine can retrieve the fact at all. Paste one into our free AI citability scorer tool to see how it grades.

Step 04

Cite

The engine picks a short list of sources, usually a handful rather than a page of results. Entity clarity, recency, and author signals tip which ones make the final cut. We have not measured that shortlist size ourselves, so we do not publish a number for it. See how we got an independent guide cited in AI search (Hyperliquid Guide case study).

The piece most agencies miss: every stage compounds. A page that fails parsing never gets retrieved. A page that gets retrieved but has weak entity signals gets ranked lower in the citation list. We work all four stages every week, on every page that has citation potential.
// GEO vs AEO vs AIO

Same goal, different acronyms.

The AI-search world has picked up a lot of new terms in the last year. Here is what they mean and how they fit together.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of optimizing your content so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite it when they answer a user's question. Instead of chasing a blue-link ranking, you are trying to become the source the model quotes.

Is GEO the same as AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

In practice, yes. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization, and most of the industry uses the two terms for the same work: getting your content pulled into AI-generated answers. Some people draw a fine line, with AEO for being the direct answer and GEO for the wider AI response, but the tactics overlap almost completely. We use GEO because it is the more widely adopted label.

How is GEO different from AIO (AI Overviews)?

AIO refers to Google's AI Overviews, the AI summary box at the top of some Google results. That is one specific product. GEO is the broader discipline of optimizing for every AI engine, AI Overviews included. So AIO is a place you want to show up, and GEO is how you get there.

Do I still need traditional SEO?

Yes. Google's own documentation on AI features and your website states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special structured data to add, so GEO and AEO are still SEO at their core. The technical foundation of crawlable pages, clean HTML, real expertise, and schema feeds both your Google rankings and your AI citations. GEO adds a layer on top: passage-level structure, entity clarity, and AI crawler access. We run both in the same weekly cycle. For the full breakdown of where GEO SEO and classic search optimization diverge, read the comparison.
