// the brief

What was slowing this site down?

Google couldn't reliably crawl it. When we onboarded the domain there were 1,910 failed requests from server errors, and AI crawlers including PerplexityBot were blocked entirely at the Cloudflare WAF level with an 81% crawl failure rate. Before any ranking work could compound, the technical foundation had to be fixed first.

Dr. Critter is a licensed wildlife removal company serving Central Florida — squirrel, bat, raccoon, rat, snake, and more, with same-day response, full damage repair, and attic restoration. They arrived with something most SEO clients don't have: a genuine 4.9-star rating across 343+ reviews. The brand trust was already there. The search infrastructure wasn't. That's been the brief: build the layer that earns the reputation what it's already worth.

// the work

What did we change, and in what order?

01
Crawl health emergency. Fixed 5xx server errors generating 1,910 failed crawl requests. Unblocked ClaudeBot and whitelisted PerplexityBot in the Cloudflare WAF — it had been rejecting 81% of Perplexity's crawl attempts, making the site effectively invisible to AI-sourced citations.
02
Core Web Vitals. Added fetchpriority="high" and a preload link to the LCP hero image. Applied font-display:swap to all web font declarations to eliminate render blocking. Added explicit width and height attributes to 91 images that were missing them — fixing a CLS of 0.72 that was dragging Page Experience scores.
03
Location hub and internal linking. Built a unified /service-areas/ hub page linking every city and region page. Added contextual links from each service page to its matching location pages, and cross-linked related blog posts. Every location page is now reachable within two hops from the homepage so PageRank actually flows to the long-tail.
04
Content depth and E-E-A-T. Rewrote bat removal pages with Florida exclusion law compliance details — legally accurate content that builds trust and answers the question prospects are actually asking. Added operator bio and license/certification info to the homepage. Created dedicated landing pages for emergency wildlife removal and attic restoration, two of the highest-conversion services that had no standalone pages.
05
Google Business Profile. Set correct primary category to "Animal Control Service," declared service areas (SAB configuration), uploaded 20+ photos including before/after job shots, and restarted the GBP post cadence at a minimum two posts per month. 343 five-star reviews were already there — we made sure Google's local systems could read and surface them properly.
